The San Francisco Legal Professionals Association (“SFLPA”) is one of more than 50 member associations throughout California of Legal Secretaries, Incorporated (“LSI”). SFLPA was established in 1936 and incorporated in 1962. Both LSI and SFLPA are nonprofit corporations.

SFLPA’s objectives are to unite individuals employed in the legal field so that ideas may be exchanged and knowledge increased. Our primary function is to raise and maintain standards of excellence by its members, provide educational opportunities, and offer leadership and guidance, much the same way the Bar Association functions for its members, by offering SFLPA members opportunities for continuing education, networking and employment referrals.

The prerequisites for membership are: (1) a minimum of one year employment in a law office or in work of a legal nature; (2) permanent employment of a legal nature at the time of application; and (3) attendance at two SFLPA-sponsored functions. All persons performing secretarial or other duties in any law office, a trust department of a bank or trust company, or any public or private institution engaged in work of a legal nature may become a member. Upon joining SFLPA, you automatically become a member of Legal Secretaries, Incorporated. The yearly membership fee is:

Dues $45 (per year)
One-Time Initiation Fee: $10
TOTAL $55

SFLPA offers the following:

CCLS STUDY GROUP: California Certified Legal Secretary is a program instituted by LSI to qualify secretaries in all areas of law by studying for, and passing, a comprehensive one-day examination which encompasses seven areas of knowledge, such as communications skills, bookkeeping and California legal procedure.

EDUCATIONAL SEMINARS: SFLPA occasionally hosts Saturdays seminars on timely subjects.

LEGAL PROCEDURES: SFLPA keeps members informed of changes in court rules and procedure.

MONTHLY MEETINGS: Monthly dinner meetings are held every third Tuesday to conduct the business of the corporation as well as to present an educational program presented by a guest speaker.

BROWN BAG LUNCHEONS: Every fourth Tuesday SFLPA holds a continuing education “Brown Bag” lunch. The topic is usually law-related or may be an open forum for discussion of problems relating to our profession.

NEWSLETTER: SFLPA’s monthly newsletter, the HEARSAY, contains articles, officers’ reports, and information on employment, courts, and upcoming events, including seminars and workshops held by other legal secretary associations in the Bay Area. Members also receive LSI’s quarterly magazine, The Legal Secretary.

SCHOLARSHIPS: Scholarships are offered for beginning and entry-level persons interested in pursuing work in the legal field.

TRAINING COURSE: Each year SFLPA offers Basic Civil Litigation Education Program, a comprehensive eight week training course for the beginning legal secretary. This program covers the main areas of law with a special emphasis on litigation. In addition, the benefits of networking with peers and other legal personnel is priceless.
